We support undergraduate students who have never been employed by linking them with potential employers throughout the country, through internships and work readiness training. We also support these youths to become tomorrow’s entrepreneurs by providing them with specialized training, business proposal development, and access to financing.
RiseUp has developed work readiness skills curriculum. The curriculum is designed as a first step toward helping to prepare those seeking entry- level jobs or internships for the workplace by developing the skills and knowledge that are essential for success. We recognize that entry- level jobseekers may enter this pipeline through a number of referral mechanisms.
This core soft skills curriculum along with other additional components, including one on one supporting, mentoring and coaching, ongoing assessment and screening process, customized training, case management, career development and ongoing retention and
advancement support will enable entry- level workers to not only demonstrate their readiness to successfully enter the workplace, but retain and advance in their positions.
There are six sections in the curriculum and each section has multiple lessons. Some lessons cover more than one topic. Each lesson has a number of exercises and activities to provide real practice for skill development. The trainings are conducted in an environment that matches the work setting and that the same performance that will be required on the job be demonstrated at the training site.
To the extent possible, participants are allowed to demonstrate the skills taught in a real-world situation.
Our youth programs are dedicated to serving the youth aged 15 to 35, including university graduates, who are aspiring entrepreneurs and running early-stage small businesses and are facing challenges. We provide these youth with tailored entrepreneurial training, including business plan development coaching, and link them to financial institutions. Early-stage entrepreneurs are supported in a number of ways, including workshops, introducing technology for development (via crowd funding platforms), financial support, and access to financing.
RiseUp uses internationally recognized comprehensive entrepreneurship programs produced by International Youth Foundation (IYF) in partnership with Microsoft called Build Your Business (BYB) and financial literacy- VISA from Silatech aimed global initiative to inspire young people to embrace innovation, imagination and creativity to grow entrepreneurship mentality. RiseUp has licensed to use these courses. RiseUp has also translated those materials into Somali and utilizes these comprehensive and interactive entrepreneurship programs in order to build the
entrepreneurial capability of the Somali youth whose majority lack the necessary entrepreneurial and business skills to manage or run their businesses; this include basic principles of small business management, financial literacy. The Build Your Business (BYB) course consists of 14 modules contained on a DVDROM. ese module include a variety of computer-aided activities that teach learners the basic business skills and technology know-how required to create and operate a business. The skills introduced on the computer are designed to be enhanced by face-to-face (f2f) activities led by a classroom facilitator and reinforced through hands-on, community-based activities. The e-learning activities are designed to be
self-guided by the learner; however, facilitators should be present to support learners through this process. BYB achieves its maximum impact with active facilitation throughout the course from qualified facilitators and hands-on activities realized by the learners.
The 14 computer-based modules consist of approximately 30 instructional hours.
The concepts introduced via the computer are reinforced by approximately 40 hours of facilitator led instruction and hands-on activities conducted outside the classroom. The e-learning modules feature three types of activities:
Tasks for learners to perform, including market simulations, case studies,
interactive exercises;
Exercises to create and save on the computer or other storage device for
later use;
Hands-on assignments to complete in their local community.
Build Your Business uses an approach known as a threaded curriculum where
certain ideas are introduced early on to learners within the course and then revisited several times throughout the remaining modules. Each time ideas are reintroduced, they become more developed and complex. As facilitators, you play an important role in reinforcing these concepts. Following are the proposed 14 modules for the training.
To make sure our programs are inclusive, we support marginalized youth, including IDPs. Unlike other organizations, we aim to provide specialized modern demand aligned vocational trainings. RiseUp is currently working on digital skills training curriculum to leverage on technology to transform lives of less privileged youth.
